All about the Nursery and Us

Monty and Emma Davies opened the doors, as the new owners of 'The Walled Nursery' on 1st February 2010.

'The Walled Nursery' is situated in Hawkhurst, Kent, in the 'High Weald', area of outstanding natural beauty.

Who are we?

Monty studied at Hadlow College in Hadlow, Kent. Monty gained an HND in Landscape Management in 1998 and then went on to start up his own gardening business in 1999 until forming 'The Garden Gate' gardening business with Emma in 2005.

Emma volunteered at Great Dixter whilst studying, then worked at Pashley Manor Gardens in Ticehurst for one year. Emma was then employed by the National Trust as a gardener at Sissinghurst Castle Garden in 2006 where she has worked for five years.

The Nursery

Monty and Emma purchased the nursery from Peter and Karen Horn who themselves bought the nursery in 1995. The Walled Nursery is not your average plant nursery, it is a nursery set within a Victorian walled kitchen garden boasting 13 Victorian glasshouses. It is one of the few 'intact' Victorian kitchen gardens in the UK today. It has a Melon House, Peach House, Fernery, ¾ span Vinery to name but a few. The glasshouses were lovingly restored by Peter and Karen Horn whilst they owned the nursery and now Monty and Emma have taken on the challenge of the never ending care which these beautiful glasshouses need!

Future plans

Monty and Emma are both passionate plants people. This is their first nursery venture so they are on a steep learning curve. Their aim is to produce more and more of their own plants to cultivate a reputation for having an exciting and broad range of excellent quality herbaceous perennials and shrubs.

The renovation work never ends, these structures are fragile as they are made from wood and glass and the weather wears them down constantly. Monty and Emma are working with English Heritage and Architects who specialise in Victorian Glasshouses to make sure that the Glasshouses are maintained in the correct way. The Walled Nursery is a labour of love!

Monty and Emma are not only cultivating their baby plants but are also cultivating their own babies as they have two young sons, Rufus and Tommy. They certainly have their hands full!
